Management by Exception (MBE) – The Golden Rule! 🌟
Imagine: You are the CEO. You get 1000 emails a day.
- Email 1: "We sold 1 pen less today."
- Email 2: "The coffee machine is broken."
- Email 3: "FACTORY FIRE!" 🔥
Which one do you care about? Only Email 3.
Definition: A control technique where only significant deviations (Exceptions) are brought to the attention of top management.
The Principle 📜
"If you try to control everything, you end up controlling nothing."
- Set a Tolerance Limit: e.g., "Tell me only if costs go up by > 5%."
- Case A: Cost up by 2%. -> Ignore (Subordinates handle it).
- Case B: Cost up by 10%. -> ALERT BOSS! 🚨
Advantages ✅
- Saves Time: Boss focuses on big issues (Strategy, Crisis).
- Better Focus: Brain power is used for critical problems.
- Delegation: Routine problems are handled by juniors (Training for them).
Disadvantages ❌
- False Security: Sometimes small problems add up to a big disaster (Death by 1000 cuts).
- Data Accuracy: If the data is wrong, the "Exception" alarm won't ring.
MBE: Focus on Deviations (Errors). Critical Point Control (KRA): Focus on Key Areas (e.g., "Quality" is key, "Cafeteria menu" is not). Both are used together to save the manager's sanity!
