Functional Organisation – The Specialist's Rule! 🧠
Proposed by: F.W. Taylor (The Scientific Management guy).
The Core Idea:
- In Line Organisation, one boss does everything.
- Taylor said: "Impossible! One man can't be an expert in everything."
- Solution: Divide management by FUNCTION (Specialization).
Structure:
- Instead of one "Factory Manager", you have:
- Route Clerk (Planning)
- Time & Cost Clerk (Finance)
- Disciplinarian (HR)
- Gang Boss (Execution)
- Speed Boss (Efficiency) ...and so on (8 Bosses!).
Crucial Difference:
- In Line & Staff, the Specialist (Staff) only advises.
- In Functional, the Specialist has AUTHORITY to command.
- The Quality Boss can order a worker: "Stop the machine!"
- The Speed Boss can order: "Work faster!"
Advantages ✅
- Super Specialization: Every aspect is guided by an expert.
- High Efficiency: Standardization and perfection.
- Relief for Top Management: They don't need to know details.
Disadvantages (The Chaos) ❌
- Violates Unity of Command:
- Worker's Nightmare:
- Boss A says: "Go fast!"
- Boss B says: "Go slow and check quality!"
- Worker: "Who do I listen to?!" 😵
- Worker's Nightmare:
- Coordination is Hard: Specialists fight with each other.
- Expensive: Hiring 8 experts is costlier than 1 general manager.
Modern Functional Structure (Departmentation) 🏢
Today, we don't use Taylor's "8 Bosses" exactly. We use Functional Departmentation.
- CEO
- Marketing Head (Commands all marketing staff)
- Finance Head (Commands all finance staff)
- HR Head (Commands all HR staff)
This is the standard structure for most companies (Apple, Google, etc.).

💡 Final Wisdom: "Functional Organisation is like a hospital. You have a Heart Specialist, a Bone Specialist, and a Brain Specialist. Great for treatment, but if they don't talk to each other, the patient dies!" 🏥💀
