Delegation of Authority – The Art of Letting Go! 👐
Scenario: You are a Manager. You have 100 files to check.
- Option A: Check all 100 yourself. Stay in office till midnight. Get sick. 🤒
- Option B: Give 20 files to each of your 5 subordinates. Go home at 6 PM. 🏠
Option B is Delegation.
Definition: The downward transfer of authority from a superior to a subordinate.
Why Delegate? (Importance) 🌟
- Reduces Manager's Burden: Manager can focus on "Big Picture" (Strategy) instead of routine work.
- Employee Development: Subordinates learn new skills by doing the boss's work.
- Motivation: Employees feel trusted and important.
- Faster Decisions: Decisions happen at the lower level, no need to wait for the boss.
Delegation: "I give you the task, but I am still watching and I am still responsible." Abdication: "I give you the task and I don't care anymore. Bye!" Never Abdicate!
Elements of Delegation (The Process) 🪜
- Assignment of Responsibility: "Ram, you handle the client meeting."
- Granting of Authority: "Ram, here is the company credit card for lunch expenses."
- Creation of Accountability: "Ram, give me a report by 5 PM. If the client is unhappy, I will ask YOU."
Barriers to Delegation (Why Bosses Don't Delegate) 🛑
1. "I can do it better" Syndrome:
- Boss thinks: "If I give it to him, he will make mistakes. I'll just do it myself."
- Result: Boss is overworked, subordinate never learns.
2. Fear of Exposure:
- Boss thinks: "If my junior does a great job, maybe he will replace me!" (Insecurity).
3. Lack of Trust:
- "My team is useless." (Often because the boss never trained them!).
4. Love for Power:
- Some bosses just love holding all the keys.
Real Life Example: Narayana Murthy (Infosys) 👨💻
When Infosys started, Narayana Murthy did everything. But as it grew, he Delegated:
- Nandan Nilekani handled Finance/Strategy.
- Kris Gopalakrishnan handled Tech.
- Murthy focused on Global Vision.
Result: Infosys became a giant. If Murthy tried to code every software himself, Infosys would be a small shop today!
