WTO Agreements – The Rulebook! 📚

WTO is not just one agreement. It's a bundle of agreements.

1. AoA (Agreement on Agriculture) 🌾

  • Goal: Fair trade in farming.
  • Controversy:
    • Rich countries (USA/EU) give huge subsidies to their farmers, making their wheat cheap.
    • Poor countries (India) want to protect their farmers.
    • India's Stand: "We need to give MSP (Minimum Support Price) to feed our poor. Don't stop us!"

2. TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) 💡

  • Goal: Protect Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks globally.
  • Impact:
    • Good for Innovation (Pharma companies invest in R&D).
    • Bad for Poor: Medicines become expensive (No cheap copies allowed).
    • Compulsory Licensing: In emergencies (like Covid), govts can override patents.

3. GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) 👨‍💻

  • Goal: Free trade in Services (Banking, IT, Tourism).
  • India loves GATS: Because we export IT and people (Doctors/Engineers). We want other countries to open their doors to our professionals.

4. TRIMS (Trade-Related Investment Measures) 🏭

  • Goal: Remove restrictions on foreign investment.
  • Rule: You cannot force a foreign company to buy 100% local raw materials.
