Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) – Building Asia! 🏗️

Established: 2016. HQ: Beijing, China. Members: 100+ (Much larger than NDB).

Context:

  • Asia needs $8 Trillion for infrastructure. World Bank + ADB (Asian Development Bank) didn't have enough money.
  • China launched AIIB to fill this gap.

Objectives 🎯

  1. Infrastructure: Focus on Energy, Transport, Water, and Urban development.
  2. Connectivity: Linking Asian economies (part of China's Belt and Road vision, though AIIB denies direct link).
  3. Green Economy: Moving towards sustainable infrastructure.

Difference from NDB 🆚

  • NDB: 5 BRICS countries (Equal power).
  • AIIB: 100+ countries (China is the biggest shareholder and has Veto power).
  • India in AIIB: India is the 2nd largest shareholder and the largest borrower!
Western Members?

Unlike NDB, AIIB has Western members like UK, Germany, France, Australia. USA and Japan refused to join.
