Imagine: You invented a revolutionary new phone. Someone copies your design and sells it cheaper. Without IPR: Nothing you can do. They stole your idea legally. With IPR: You sue them. Court orders them to stop. You get damages.
IPR = Legal rights over creations of the mind.
What is Intellectual Property? ð§
Property created by intellect (mind), not by physical labor.
Examples:
- A song you composed (Copyright).
- A logo for your brand (Trademark).
- A new medicine formula (Patent).
- The secret recipe of Coca-Cola (Trade Secret).
Types of Intellectual Property Rights ð
1. Patents ðŽ
- Protection for inventions (New products, processes, machines).
- Example: A new solar panel design.
- Duration: 20 years.
2. Trademarks âĒïļ
- Protection for brand names, logos, symbols.
- Example: Nike Swoosh, McDonald's Golden Arches.
- Duration: 10 years (renewable forever).
3. Copyright ÂĐïļ
- Protection for creative works (Books, Music, Films, Software).
- Example: Harry Potter books.
- Duration: Lifetime of author + 60 years.
4. Trade Secrets ðĪŦ
- Protection for confidential business information.
- Example: KFC's 11 herbs and spices recipe.
- Duration: As long as it remains secret.
5. Geographical Indications (GI) ð
- Protection for products from specific regions.
- Example: Darjeeling Tea, Basmati Rice, Mysore Silk.
Why is IPR Important? ð
