Business Ethics – Meaning & Importance
Business Ethics (also known as Corporate Ethics) is a form of applied ethics or professional ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment.
Meaning
The word "Ethics" comes from the Greek word Ethos, meaning character or custom.
- It is the code of conduct that guides companies in their daily dealings with stakeholders (employees, customers, society).
- It is not just about following the law (Compliance); it is about doing the Right Thing even when no one is watching.
Importance of Business Ethics
1. Long-Term Survival
An unethical business might make quick profits (e.g., selling harmful products), but it will eventually be punished by the market or regulators. Ethical companies survive longer (Sustainability).
2. Reputation & Brand Value
Trust is the most valuable currency. Tata Group typically enjoys high trust because of its strong ethical foundations. Cost of acquiring customers is lower for trusted brands.
3. Employee Retention
Talented people prefer working for ethical companies. Unethical environments lead to high stress and attrition.
4. Investor Confidence
Investors avoid companies with "Governance Issues". A strong ethical record reduces the Cost of Capital.
